Released on 1st June 1992
It was the fifth single to be lifted from their debut album Generation Terrorists which was released in February of that year. It was to become the song that truly defined Manic Street Preachers in my opinion. Indeed, when I spoke with James Bradfield of the band recently in an interview, he cited playing the song live at festivals in Europe and the response from audiences as a defining moment where he knew that they had captured the imaginations of many.
It was written by Bradfield and Nicky Wire (lyricist) – the lyrics inspired in part by S E Hinton’s 1975 novel Rumble Fish (she also wrote the outsiders; Francis FOrd Coppola adapted the novel, Rumble Fish, into a film in 1983) – but the band also interpreted the lyrics as a discussion of hollowness of the consumer lifestyle offered by capitalism, describing how society expects young people to conform. Some of the lyrics are taken from the poem “Neon Loneliness” (the first line of the chorus, “Under neon loneliness,” is a direct lift) by Welsh poet Patrick Jones, the brother of MSP bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire.
On 1 February 1995, Edwards disappeared from the Embassy Hotel at Bayswater Road in London after checking out at 7:00 am. His car was found abandoned 17 February 1995 at the Severn View service station near the Severn Bridge. Edwards was never seen again, although the band have kept a percentage of the royalties aside should he return. He was declared presumed dead on 28 November 2008 by his family. The band commented that they respect their decision. Manic Street Preachers was put on hold for six months and disbanding the group was seriously considered, but with the blessing of Edwards’ family, the other members continued.
The 1992 single carried the quote “I talk to God but the sky is empty.” – Sylvia Plath on it’s cover.
