This is the last Big Day Out in New Zealand

News broke early this evening that this Friday’s event will be the last ever Big Day Out event in New Zealand.

This year’s festival was slimmed down – with headliner Kanye West dropped from the Auckland show, and the main arena only having one stage, a blow was also struck when Odd Future who were booked to play the festival were banned by the Auckland City Council from performing at the Mt Smart venue after receiving a complaint about their lyrical content.

“We found ourselves looking back at the Big Day Out and over the last few years it’s grown a bit and it’s become a bit out of control and it’s become a bit, honestly a bit too expensive, so we have looked at I guess going back to the beginning and rebuilding it,” said the Big Day Out’s New Zealand promoter Campbell Smith in November, when Kanye was dropped from the line-up. However ticket sales for teh event are reportedly low – Smith telling the NZ Herald that Friday is unlikely to sell out.

  1. I think it won’t sell out because they have such a shit line up. The BDO are so uninventive and uninspired with their band choices, and there is no act to draw me in. I was even offered a free ticket and declined.

Soundgarden? Oh FFS. The problem with the BDO is they only seem to know a handful of bands and repeat them every second year. I’m not sad they won’t be back in 2013, because I can imagine it now… Tool, Muse, blah blah blah.
