You can’t teach an old (Johnny Moon)Dog new tricks is the saying – and Moondog is well known to go off on his own tangents – so it should have come as no surprise after Cheese on Toast asked him to tell us his current top 5 songs (a relatively simple instruction, one would have thought) that he came back with this fantastic rant about the best gigs he’s been to in the past 30 months in New York…
1. Andre Williams backed by the Sadies
My all time fave concert was actually the Norton 25th anniversary show and Mr williams also played that but in this clip he is backed by the Sadies who are unbelievably talented sonsabitches!
This is at Brooklyn bowl where you can play bowls while you rockin roll. Andre is pushing 80 but is still the baddest mutha fucker on the block! Keep it greasy…
2. The Swingin’ Neckbreakers
This band is from New Jersey and have been going since the early 90′s. Clever rock’n'roll tunes that are so catchy they’ll lodge in your brains groove lobe for months.
LSM6 got to play on a bill with them at the 2010 Psychobilly Luau in Brooklyn and they tore it up live like a big block Hemi tears up a quarter mile!
3. Southern Culture on the Skids
I have loved SCOTS ever since their debut To Much Pork For Just One Fork. The last time I saw them in NZ I was supporting them in an old band at the Powerstation around ’98 and our singer was too pissed to play. This time they were playing in a small 100 capacity club in New Jersey and they really are too clever for words.
Afterwards Rick Miller said he loves Paul Crowthers Hotcake and he also had a laugh about remembering how wasted our old singer was.
In this performance they are covering Link wrays Skull Bucket, so two for one.
4. Heavy Trash
Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Rays’ psychedelic rock-a-billy combo is a mish mash of all that’s right with southern roots revival music. Spencers spazzy yelps and croon and Verta-Rays dagger guitar work are dynamic and raw boned!
we saw them at their last album release show and they played to about 30 people. An intimate treat.
LSM6 recorded Dirty & Dumb in Verta-Rays sound laboratory and I got to use Bo Diddleys’ Magnavox. Yes, I got my thrills!
5. Bob Log III
Always a joy to witness the full Log experience! To play guitar the way he does is genius let alone with all the crazy shit on his head and operating a drum kit with ya feet!
Have another Boob Scotch!
we have been spoiled bastards to be able to see so many great shows. Some others we have seen are; The Gories, Blood Shot Bill, The Mighty Hannibal, Ronnie Ronette, Detroit Cobras, Holly Golightly, Blues Explosion, wanda Jackson,The Velvelettes and Question Mark and the Mysterions. Tinnitus never felt so good!
