Matt Joe Gow & Andy Pollock of The Dead Leaves were visiting Auckland last week for a wee promo visit since they just released their album Cities on the Sea.
The Dead Leaves are a four-piece; Matt is a journeyman songwriter from Melbourne via Dunedin – and after working as a solo artist he’s now formed this band and wrote the material with Andy and guys as a much more collaborative effort. “The solo record is more introspective, more personal; but with this record I wanted to be slightly more removed so that people could apply their own stories to what I am singing about” he tells us.
“I remember that Police track Every Breath You Take and finding out that it was about him being a stalker and I thought ‘eeew’ … I was kinda happy to not know that – and it’s the same with these songs – some of them are fairly open to interpretation…” but he claims that none of the songs on this record are about being a stalker – “No I don’t sing about being a stalker, that’d give me away…” – smart move. That was clearly Stings mistake.
While they were literally just around the corner from Cheese on Toast HQ; we decided to speak on speaker-phones… and now you can listen in on the phone call here…
