BLADE RUNNER (1982) HD
SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 1 June, 8.30pm
Science Fiction
A haunting, early prophetic mixture of science fiction and film noir, director Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner boasts one of the most astonishingly designed futures ever put on film – a dark and decaying Los Angeles circa 2019.
Harrison Ford stars as Rick Deckard, a one-time “blade runner” (or sanctioned assassin). The cynical, world-weary Deckard is called out of retirement to stop four “replicants” – genetically altered humans with superior strength and intellects who are used as slave labour on “off-world” colonies. These homicidal androids have returned to Earth for a murderous killing spree; their leader is Roy Batty, a dangerous “combat model” whose ultimate target is Eldon Tyrell, owner of the same corporation that created Roy.
But Deckard has to find Batty before he can stop him. His investigation now leads Deckard across the glittering heights and disintegrating depths of a fantastically imagined metropolis, one whose cloud-piercing pyramids, enormous neon billboards and sleek flying cars are offset by terrible overcrowding and downpours of acid rain.
Before his search is over, Deckard will find himself falling in love with Rachael, Tyrell’s beautiful, mysterious assistant. He will also face off against Batty, in brutal hand-to-hand combat. But Deckard’s most troubling discovery will be the suspicion that he might be a replicant himself.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (2003) HD
SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 8 June, 8.30pm
Action
Balian (Orlando Bloom) is a blacksmith who lost his family and nearly lost his faith. Amid the pageantry and intrigues of medieval Jerusalem he falls in love, grows into a leader, and ultimately uses all his courage and skill to defend the city against staggering odds. Destiny comes seeking Balian in the form of a great knight, Godfrey of Ibelin (Liam Neeson), a Crusader briefly home to France from fighting in the East. Revealing himself as Balian’s father, Godfrey shows him the true meaning of knighthood and takes him on a journey across continents to the fabled Holy City. King Baldwin’s (Edward Norton) vision of peace—a ‘kingdom of heaven’—is shared by a handful of knights, including Godfrey of Ibelin, who swear to uphold it with their lives and honour. As Godfrey passes his sword to his son, he also passes on that sacred oath: to protect the helpless, safeguard the peace, and work toward harmony between religions and cultures, so that a kingdom of heaven can flourish on earth. Balian takes the sword and steps into history.

GLADIATOR (2000) HD
SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 15 June, 8.30pm
Action
Winner of five Academy Awards®, Gladiator revived the sword and sandal epic while becoming one of the most acclaimed and popular historical dramas of the decade! Russell Crowe won an Oscar® for his star-making turn as a general whose family is murdered by a corrupt prince (Academy Award®-nominee Joaquin Phoenix). He embarks on a desperate quest for revenge that sees him fighting in front of thousands of Romans in the Coliseum.

AMERICAN GANGSTER (2007) HD
SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 22 June, 8.30pm
Crime
Academy Award®-winner Russell Crowe is an honest cop battling drugs and police corruption in 1970s New York. The main focus of his investigation is a huge heroin empire built by a charismatic black drug dealer (Academy Award®-winner Denzel Washington) who imports enormous amounts of top-grade heroin from Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. Working from a powerful screenplay by Academy Award®-winning writer Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List), Academy Award®-nominated director Ridley Scott helms a taut and gritty crime drama, based on a true story, featuring powerhouse performances from its heavyweight leading men.

A GOOD YEAR (2005) HD
SKY MOVIES GREATS – Friday 29 June, 8.30pm
Drama
Oscar®-winner Russell Crowe reunites with director Ridley Scott in A Good Year. London-based investment expert Max Skinner (Crowe) moves to Provence to sell a small vineyard he has inherited from his late uncle. Max reluctantly settles into what ultimately becomes an intoxicating new chapter in his life, as he comes to realise that life is meant to be savoured. A Good Year is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Peter Mayle. The film also stars the esteemed Albert Finney as Max’s late Uncle Henry, who imparts wisdom to his nephew; Marion Cotillard as a café owner who catches Max’s eye and Abbie Cornish as Max’s supposed long-lost cousin, who may hold the vineyard’s title rights.
