Alt-J is the keyboard shortcut on an Apple Mac to make a triangle. It’s also, then, it’s the very nerdy name of this Leeds quartet. But there’s something undeniably charming about this collection of quirky yet, almost inexplicably, catchy songs. Within moments I was caught by the unexpected weaves and turns this record takes. Imagine smart indie-pop was a sock drawer – Alt J seem to have opened that draw and purposefully, almost methodically, taken each sock and mis-matched it with another sock. I think they might be contrary smart-asses in the best kind of way.
Track picks :
Fitzpleasure – a seriously mean bassline that would make Skrillex cry meets a Western theme in an indie playground.
Breezeblocks – a love song from a psychopath with possible cannibal tendancies.
Something Good – maybe if Radiohead weren’t just stupidly massive.
Tressallate – “Triangles are my favorite shape”
RATING : 8.2/10
