When 4AD sign their first ever hip hop act and he’s a producer / emcee from Miami Florida who is renown for his dark production styles you kinda got to sit up and pay attention. This album is somewhat of a compilation of earlier raps from SGP with a couple of new tunes for his very first commercial release.
And it’s definitely the production here that truly stands out as being something of it’s own; video-game-ish blips and blops are combined deftly with eerie sparseness to create a post-modern nihilism that is more than simply disconcerting; more than uncomfortable – it becomes addictively intriguing.
Track picks
Don’t Give A Damn – wonderfully dark, sparse, and disenfranchised
Tha Black God – wonderfully dark, sparse and psychotically megalomanic
Get Yah Head Bust – or actually the advice is not to get your head bust; which are, indeed, wise words. Sounding like muted steel drums that trickle like water torture – and then one of best false endings ever before “I am the walrus…”
Oriris of Tha East – A rhythm like being murdered by ping pong with a rat.
No Evidence – A truly disconcerting whispered lyrical hook.
Danger – This is one of the brand new songs made specifically for this release. The ‘Danger” hook is messed up to the point it’s almost uncomfortable.
