TOP 5 – Thom from Chalk Horses (previously Rifles)

Rifles recently relocated to Auckland and changed their name to Chalk Horses. You can find out more about that in their interview over at Under The Radar

Cheese on Toast asked Thom from the band to tell us his current Top 5 songs that he’s digging right now…

5. Do You Know The Way To San Jose – Dionne Warwick.
This is my number one karaoke song. It’s gorgeously upbeat and saccharin to listen to but leaves a lost, hollow feeling in my stomach – as only the best karaoke songs can.
I don’t believe Dionne believes San Jose is all it’s cracked up to be.

4. The Lady In Red – Chris De Burgh
Hush your face. This song is killer and smashes your aorta like a Tua left hook.
I love how fragile Chris’s voice sounds and almost breaks on “…there’s nobody here…”
I actually believe him.

3. Wire – The 15th
Wire wrote a pop song in the late 70′s that still sounds relevant and better than anything in the charts today.
Even the Fisherspooner remake is pretty good.

2. The Knife – We Share Our Mother’s Health – Trentemoller Remix
If I owned a club this would be it’s theme song and there would be a massive revolving dance floor that looked like a dart board.
People would be allowed to throw darts at will.

1. Pure Imagination – Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory – Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
This tune helps lift the stubborn veil of adult cynicism and makes me vaguely happy for 4 minutes.

All my favourite songs tend to uplifting instrumentally but savagely soul crushing vocally, as exhibited in this dance-floor-clearing party mix.

Welcome to da club.

Chalk Horses are playing at the MUM Clubnight this Friday at Cassette with Forest Spirits and Deer Park
