Cheese on Toast hasn’t had a new mixtape in a wee while – so I got pretty excited when the lovely chaps over at Rose Quartz made this one for us…
1. d’Eon – Thousand Mile Trench (E 1999 ETERNAL EDIT)
Re-edit of one of our fav artists at the moment by our Internet Friend/double cup fan from Wellington, Kurt Thomas. – Richard
2. Dream Continuum – Give A Lil Luv
Real floating, colour-drenched breaks from the recent footwork/jungle-blurring collab between Machinedrum and Om Unit. – Richard
3. Nguzunguzu – Delirium
Deconstructing rave signifiers and other classic dance music tropes, this LA duo are doing some exciting stuff at the moment. – Richard
4. Penelope Nettles – モール (マトリックス)
This is dance music in web-mode, more suited to yr Tumblr/Twitter browsing than for dancing in the club. The video for this one seems like a vital contextual reference point. – Shea
5. Gecko Afterlife HD – ☺ Earth Jump
Chameleonic sound voyager James Ferraro tries his hand in dancier realms and the result is gorgeous; nature-identified footwork set adrift by pan-flutes and all sorts of new-agey positivity. Chug back a green juice to this one. – Shea
6. Huerco S. – No Jack
Zoned out, druggy house from a producer with some of the most incessant bass rhythms around. – Richard
7. Actress – R.I.P.
This opening track from Actress recent R.I.P. record (though not quite up there with his previous “Splazsh) is so beguiling with those ultra-condensed textures and disorienting synth melodies. – Richard
8. Laurel Halo – Light+Space
The raw, unadorned vocals, over the top of spare, ambient instrumentation, are totally haunting and indicative of an internet-era disembodiment. -Tim
9. Jam City – How We Relate to the Body
Deconstructed house music. I love the way it combines cleanness & lifestyle-positive vibes with a really British difficulty. -Tim
10. Bwana – It Ain’t Done Til It’s Over
Ridiculously good use of gun/reloading sound FX while still crafting one of the dreamiest cross-genre electronic tracks of the year. – Richard
11. Squadda B – I Miss Ya’ll (Prod. by Friendzone)
Oakland duo Main Attrakionz’ 808s and Dark Grapes II was one of our favourite hip-hop releases from last year, and the solo offerings from Squadda B are just as fresh. The pared-back, crisp production and “Dilemma”-recalling xylophone is nicely offset by Squadda’s sentimental, codeine’d drawl. – Shea
12. Napolian – Banquet
This guy is only something like 19 but making some of the most realised, boundary pushing retrofuturistic electronic tunes of the moment, splicing soft synth tones, with glitzier dance music feelings. – Richard
13. Physical Therapy – Record Sales
Clued-in, hybrid dance music from one of our favourite NYC DJs– super glossy and buoyant. -Tim
RoseQuartz DJs are playing at D.O.C. on Friday which is also Richard’s farewell drinks as he heads overseas.
