In case you’ve not heard, or you forgot or something, like, perhaps you bumped your head and have amnesia, Weezer are coming to New Zealand to play the seminal Blue album in it’s entirety!
It will be Weezer’s first appearance in New Zealand in sixteen years and they’ll perform their legendary debut, affectionately known as “The Blue Album”, in full, from start to finish; prefaced by the band’s greatest hits and some rarities.
Cheese on Toast recently got the opportunity to ask Rivers and Pat from the band what their personal favorite tracks from The Blue Album were, and what those songs have become to mean to them over all these years – and here’s what they told us, via eMail…
“Undone – the Sweater song” was the first Weezer song I wrote; I was trying to do something like the Velvet Underground but it came out like a hybrid of Velvet Underground and Metallica’s “Sanitarium”. It was always the song people would comment on first, at our early live shows in L.A. and it’s still a crowd pleaser, 20 years later.
“Say It Ain’t So” was my first attempt to write a song about my personal history. It’s the one song I always felt most emotional playing, even to this day.
“Only in Dreams”: While we were making the album there was 4 minutes of drums at the end of a song, with no music over them. For the whole month we were making that album, Ric Ocasek, the producer, was pressuring me more and more to finish it up and put some music on there. I just kept telling him, ‘don’t worry it’s going to be great.’ On the very last day, we went and put all those guitars on, and it turned out to be probably the best guitar solo in the Weezer catalog. It’s still one of the most fun parts of the set for all of us in the band.
..and Pat gave us his Top 5 :
My Name Is Jonas – “Made the 4 track with all the music and gave it to Rivers to sing on, came out great!”
Holiday – “Just such a cool song with insanely good melodies.”
Only In Dreams – “Love the vibe!”
In The Garage – “Man, we poured a lot of sweat into the garage on the inside cover.”
Undone – “Still love that riff!”
