Roberta Lee Streeter – aka Bobbie Gentry – turns 67 today.
She was notable as one of the first female country artists to compose and produce her own material – and she, quite honestly, shitz all over Lana Del Rey! Her songs typically drew on her Mississippi roots to compose vignettes of the Southern United States. Her biggest hit, probably, was Ode to Billie Joe in 1967, which is truly a classic.
Watch her performing it in this vintage clip from the Smothers Brothers Show
There’s an excellent Blog-post about her over at Croydon Municipal
As you can see – she was a bit of a hottie!
