TOP 5 from Matt T54 and Tono

T54 and Tono & the Finance Company have collaborated to bring a double-room party to Whammy and Wine Cellar tomorrow night (Saturday 1st September) – so Cheese on Toast asked them what they are digging right now …

THE DAMNED EVANGELIST – God-Damn

“I’m on a real stink magnetic buzz at the moment and other than the mysterious tapeman himself these guys have always been the perfect example of a badass stink band to me. I was still underage and a bit out of the loop when they were really smashing up Christchurch so never got to see them down here – but I saw them at Camp A Low Hum one crazy evening and have followed all their bands since. They not only had cool music but had an even cooler aesthetic. Long live DTE (even though it’s TDE…)” – Matt – T54

ARTISAN GUNS – Pull You In

“I was hanging out with Jonathan Pearce a lot around the time Artisan Guns were recording Coral, and I knew it was going to be a good album by how seriously they were working on it. They booked dozens of gigs leading up to their sessions, and with Djeisan Suskov, they workshopped the songwriting, the sounds and performances inside out. I think you can hear it all in the record. Jonathan’s going to be playing with the Guns in Wellington this Saturday, so our good friend Anthony Metcalf is jumping in the guitar seat for this one.” – Tono

TIM MOORE – Dark Child

“This here is one of the most beautiful songs to come out of Christchurch since I’ve been around. I always loved seeing Tim play solo and he and the rest of his brothers and sisters definitely make chch a place worth hanging around in. Unfortunately for us he’s in Melbourne at the moment. So we’ve just got this video to go with and the occasional prank text. I always find the better I know people the more I like their music. But that’s what it’s like for everyone
right?” – Matt T54

WARREN ZEVON – Desperados Under the Eaves

“I’m lucky enough to work in a bar with really great music all the time, but it’s strange how after a while, you forget that it’s there. This is a song that kept coming up on our ‘LA’ playlist – I didn’t know what it was, until last week I heard it and went to check the ipod. It’s one of the few songs lately that has made me feel emotional while I’m cleaning a table or making some dude a CC and dry.” – Tono

THE TWEEKS – London Street

“I don’t know about Mr Tonnon but having never lived in Dunedin myself yet spending a lot of time there over the years recording, playing, drinking and what not I remember a very special time happening at one point in late 2006 and 2007. This was for, I feel, two reasons. The Backstage was one of them and the Tweeks were the other. They’re are the perfect example of great dudes making great music. They’ve all gone on to make sick music in various different bands but the synergy between the four of them made for some very good albums and some even better live shows. I eagerly await a reunion.” – Matt T54

“Agreed – these guys wrote the book for me about what it was to be in a band. I still ask myself – what would the Tweeks do?” – Tono
