Shit, I tell you what… The synergy that bubbles like a chemistry experiment going excitingly well between the three parts of Divine Fits (Dan Boeckner (Wolf Parade / Handsome Furs), Britt Daniel (Spoon) and Sam Brown (New Bomb Turks)) is something extra-ordinary.
The result is a potent and pace-y record. Guitars crunch and delay while synths radiate through taut rhythms over eleven awesome tracks. Kicking off withe the undeniably catchy lead single My Love Is Real – with a robotic bass line that’s almost hypnotic, before the vulnerable and emotive (in good ways) Flaggin a Ride; so good it’s disconcerting. What Gets You Alone is break-neck paced and fantastically crunchy; Boeckner sounds like he’s only just hanging in there; a man on the very edge of something.
All that before personal album highlights, the rolling, like thunder, Would That Not Be Nice; the achingly good and propulsive Baby Get Worse – “My heart is beating in and out of time” is a fantastic line. And their beautiful, chilling and edge-y cover of Boys Next Doors’ Shivers. (note the album is produced by longtime Nick Cave producer Nick Launay)
This record is going to be on so many “best of 2012″ lists, make no mistake.

RATING : FREAKIN’ AWESOME
Cheese on Toast is phasing in a new album ratings system. I have always struggled with a numerical scale; it feels so finite and arbitrary. So the new scale looks like this :
FREAKIN’ AWESOME / JUST AWESOME / REALLY GREAT / GREAT / GOOD / PRETTY COOL / NOT BAD / COULD BE BETTER / PRETTY BAD, ACTUALLY / NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EARS
