The Added Fat EP by PRODIGY [REVIEW]

My big fat heart skipped a veritable beat when, in November, I heard that Prodigy were celebrating 15 years of Fat Of The Land with a re-issue of the now-classic with an accompanying Added Fat EP – six commissioned remixes of songs that helped define how dance music and rock music could co-exist without being shitty nods at each-other.

Opening with the Noisa Remix of Smack My Bitch Up which remains true to the original with suitable reverence but extends breaks to point-break-excitement and slips in a fantastic mid-point break-down that is truly killer. Alvin Risk’s remix of Firestarter also keeps the opening bars practically unchanged – that filtered guitar-line is impossible to improve upon, in my opinion – but then shiz gets cra’y and it starts to sound like a beat-juggled gypsy anthem which is actually kinda awesome – and the outro is just fantastic.

Zed Dead reworks Breathe – again keeping the filtered guitar lines more-or-less intact – with a few re-filters smashing it against new synths that are really great – but then some awful wobbly-hackney’d dubstep effects get thrown in ‘for tha kids’ – it’s just unnecessary and disappointing. I’d have been much more interested to hear what someone with a more post-dubstep modern aesthetic might have achieved.

Baauer steps up to the mark, though with a sparsed-out version of Mindfields that’s suitably trippy. Breath gets a second go at – this time The Glitch Mob who slow shi’ down and, as their moniker indicates, add some glitches. The bass is brought right up and the vocal down in the first third before an eerie breakdown centres the track to make it suitably disturbing and a worthy reworking. Definitely one of the better versions on the EP.

Finally, Major Lazers remix of Smack My Bitch Up returns the party to full effect / full assault and is just great.

RATING : GREAT

I have always struggled with a numerical scale; it feels so finite and arbitrary.
So the CHEESE ON TOAST Scale looks like this :

FREAKIN’ AWESOME / JUST AWESOME / REALLY GREAT / GREAT / GOOD / PRETTY COOL / NOT BAD / COULD BE BETTER / PRETTY BAD, ACTUALLY / NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EARS
