THE CREEPING IVIES – Rock and Roll Party
Did you wake up this morning, like I did, with a hankering for a Scottish garage rock-n-roll duo? There must be something in the air.
Luckily, then, I found these guys in my eMail in-box when I turned my computer on.
The Creeping Ivies are Becca Bomb on guitar and vocals and Duncan Destruction on drums. Becca’s voice is that wonderful combination of honey and gravel (reminds me of the long lost Wolfie) – taking their inspirations, like every garage… [More...]
KELE – The Hunter EP
I don’t know what Kele Okereke’s problem is with shirts – but he is waging one intense war against them.
He also seems to be content to be at loggerheads with any old school Bloc Party fans left out there. ‘The Hunter’ EP is current/former (??) Bloc Party lead singer’s second solo release and it is mainstream dance-pop to a tee. Produced by XXXChange and colabbed with many (RAC, Fred Falke, Sub Focus and QNESS) The Hunter ranges from unpleasant… [More...]
Memoryhouse ‘The Years’ EP
Canadian duo Memoryhouse have been “floating around the ‘blogosphere’”(ugh, gonna have to slap myself for using that expression/made up word) since last year.
This EP is actually the re-recorded hard copy (CD and vinyl), a little padded out, of the EP of the same name from 2010. Originally a bedroom recording of tremendous Lo-Fi-ness, this recording, released on Sub Pop, is a little more slick. Slick is a relative term though, these 5 songs are still lo, chill, spooky and ethereal.
First impressions when opening… [More...]
King Cannons EP
King Cannons are ex pat Kiwis, after a sojourn to the UK, now settled in Melbourne and their EP is a high octane politically minded bluster of a record.
Clearly wearing The Clash and Springsteen on their influence-sleeves – but delivering well and truly in spades. If you turn on your bull-shit-o-meter while listening o this EP (I have one installed on my stereo – you can get them from Dick Smiths*) – you will see that clocks in at… [More...]
UNKLE – Only The Lonely
I have to admit, and I am sure I’ll have a collective noun of UNKLE fans (an “extended family” of UNKLE fans?) running up to me for the next week or so with the arms waving, flailing around manically – that’s what happens when people are “up in arms’?isn’t it?… But I have to admit I kinda found War Stories a bit boring. And then there was End Titles which was even duller. Somehow, and I gather rather remissly I… [More...]
