THE KAISER CHIEFS at Powerstation, Thursday 10 May 2012 – photos by Georgia Schofield, words by Andrew Tidball

The Kaiser Chiefs were in town last night – and seemingly, their fans couldn’t quite believe it.
I arrived just after local blendie-indie-popsters Young Lyre’s support set to a packed venue; a noticeably British accent to the anticipatory murmur / beer induced slurs. It was a little bit like going to a Torquay United Football match when I was a kid – only a shit load less depressing.
There was a definite genuine excitement amongst the crowd; something rarely seen… [More...]

TuNe-YaRdS – live at Kings Arms 12 January 2012 w/ Sam Hamilton

We arrived to be greeted by the wonderful shimmery tribal glistening on support act Sam Hamilton, recently returned home from an overseas sojourn. Sam triggered mystical synthetic sounds that throbbed and pulsed, while Will, his live drummer added a human dimension and heart(beat). Vocal yelps and haunting wails populated the magical panda-collective/animal-bear like sound-scapes created.
Merrill Garbus aka TuNe-YaRdS took the stage, greeted by eager whoops from the audience, opening with Do You Wanna Live? A question enthusiastically replied to… [More...]

DEERHOOF – live at Whammy, Saturday 7 Jan 2012 w/ Poor You, Poor Me and Sharpie Crows

What better way to open my personal favorite dungeon-come-venue for 2012 than a capacity crowd to see the wonderful and amazing Deerhoof – and it was a veritable whose-who of Auckland’s music scene rubbing shoulders with every gig-goer worth their salt – shit, even the Dum Dum Girls were there.
Late additions to the line-up when Kody and Bic’s Opossum pulled out, Poor You, Poor Me were an absolutely perfect choice for support slot – winning over new fans from… [More...]

DUM DUM GIRLS – live at Kings Arms, 7 January 2012

I arrived during the first song of The Transistors support slot; slightly annoyed at myself for missing Roy Irwin who we said hi to outside. The Transistors cemented themselves as easily one of New Zealand’s tightest, no fucking-about-solid garage punk rock bands around right now. It was a muggy night which seemed to dull the audiences ability to move – bar for a few hardy souls who were obviously more overcome by The Transistors than the humidity – and reasonably… [More...]
