Terms like “Drop The Bomb” and “Pump Me Up” which have permeated popular culture most probably find their roots in Washington Go Go.

Check out Block Party by Chuck Brown feat. DJ Kool which was a response to Fred Wesley’s “House Party”

Animals As Leaders – CAFO
Something new, different, it’s real technical compositionally, they shred, it’s heavy, they use 8 String guitars, Ibanez Guitars and they use the Fractal Audio Axe FX guitar amp modeler.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmfzWpp0hMc

Jason Becker – Perpetual Burn
Every song from this dude is outstanding, they would always be my favorite, have been listening to him for years since I was a kid, killer composing and in my opinion probably one of the only guys that can shred with pure emotion.

Meshuggah – Soul Burn
“One” of my favorites from back in the day, but I like a lot from these guys, killer polyrhythmic grooves, but with a feel that’s so relaxed and natural to them, not giving that feeling they are actually playing in an odd meter, natural, not forced.

Gary Moore – The Loner
I grew up to this song, my old man use to be a big Gary Moore fan, this dude could play, one of my all time favorite guitar players, I jam this on the guitar every now and then, real good song to get your feel, vibrato and bends down, amazing song and memories.

Joe Satriani – The Forgotten Part 2
Man this song is amazing, well obviously because Joe Satriani wrote it, nice melodies, killer solo and I mean killer, love jamming this one out, another one from the classics that will never get old.

From their press release :
Heavy Metal Ninjas have been called ‘seriously cosmic… vividly cinematic’, and in the two short years since their formation the band have already gained a reputation as consummate showmen. Their epic instrumentals are accompanied by a jaw-dropping light show and yes, since you asked – all while dressed as ninjas.
Formed as an offshoot of Kora, their musical pedigree is untouchable. Their brand new self-titled EP has been highly praised for its ‘… brutal and beautiful precision’ and If you have ever wondered what a ‘stunt guitarist’ does, now is your chance to find out.

Heavy Metal Ninjas are playing with Cairo Knife Fight and Super Villians next week at The Powerstation – May 25th

This week’s TARDIS TUNE OF THE WEEK was the 1996 single Kevin Carter by Manic Street Preachers, from their Everything Must Go album. The lyrics were written solely by Richey Edwards who had gone missing in February 1995 (and was declared “presumed dead” on 23 Novemeber 2008). The subject of the song, Kevin Carter had won a Pulizer Prize for his photograph of a starving child in the Sudan trying to reach a feeding center when a vulture landed nearby.

The photograph first appeared on March 26, 1993 in the New York Times. Hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask the fate of the girl. The paper reported that it was unknown whether she had managed to reach the feeding center. However João Silva, a Portuguese photojournalist based in South Africa who accompanied Carter to Sudan, gave a different version of events in an interview with Japanese journalist and writer Akio Fujiwara that was published in Fujiwara’s book The Boy who Became a Postcard; he said that he and Carter went to Sudan with the United Nations aboard Operation Lifeline Sudan and landed in Southern Sudan to distribute food. Parents left their children momentarily to acquire food; a vulture landed next to one such child – Carter crept up to 10 meters from them in order to take the photograph and, according to Silva chased the vulture away after the taking the photograph.

In the same year as being awarded the Pulizer Prizer Carter drove to the Braamfontein Spruit river, an area where he used to play as a child, and took his own life by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window.

Portions of his suicide note read
“I am depressed … without phone … money for rent … money for child support … money for debts … money!!! … I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain … of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners … I have gone to join Ken [recently deceased colleague Ken Oosterbroek] if I am that lucky.”

On this day in 1991 (15 May) Richey famously carved the inscription “4 REAL” into his arm during an interview with NME journalist Steve Lamacq who had questioned the bands authenticity and values – responding to Lamacqs questtion of Edwards seriousness towards his art. The injury required 18 stitches.

Temper Trap's album is out on Friday and they are coming to play with Coldplay. Cheese on Toast spoke with Dougy Mandagi the other week...

So, a couple of weeks back I got to talk with <del datetime="2012-05-14T22:08:15+00:00">Doogie Howser MD</del> Dougy Mandagi; singer from The Temper Trap ahead of the release of their self titled sophomore record – at the time of speaking; I had no idea that they were to be going on tour with Coldplay and he gave us no hints. In fact, at the time of the phone call they had just been announced as playing Lollapalooza – Dougy was talking it in his stride, though, perhaps it was that he had just got up from an afternoon nap, but he seemed almost non·plussed “It feels like I’ve been doing this forever” he wearily remarks.

I asked him if there was a moment, though, as a band when he realized that this was the thing he was supposed to be doing – “The first time we played to a decent (sized) crowd. The influence you have on people; on their mood; what they feel – even if it’s just for 45 minutes – or sometimes it’s a longer lasting impact – those moments remind me of why I do what I do.” he responds with an air of wist.

There’s a recurring theme in Dougy’s songs of displacement – rooted in his youth, he tells me – “I’ve always felt that way” explaining that he moved around lots as a child, “I’m always trying to find home, wherever that is” he reveals; and more tellingly perhaps when I ask him where home is for him now – “I dunno… I live in London.. I’ve got a bed there that’s waiting for me…”

While much of the new record talks about a relationship turned sour – there’s one song; London’s Burning which Dougy wrote when he was living in Hackney during the London riots last year – the song feels impartial and observatory; like its a news report, almost and I ask him about that – “I was just an observer, man” he remarks, telling me how he finds it interesting that some of us are privileged while others are not – he wonders if it is about choices – but then wonders if people really would make those choices themselves; it feels like he’s being particularly careful to not express an opinion either way – “I see both sides of the argument” he diplomatically avoids the question. Perhaps, in hindsight now, he was being careful to not upset too many rich Coldplay fans.

We talked about the bulk of the bulk of the record being about the relationship that turned sour – and the process of singing about heartbreak. “I had stuff to say about it – to get off my chest; I was kind of like talking myself through the experience again.” I wondered if it was hard to perform the songs night after night if they are so deeply personal; “I find the best performances are where I close my eyes and transport myself back to the that place or person again…”

The Temper Trap’s 2009 debut Conditions has been massive – propelled, in no small part, by the omnipresence of ‘Sweet Disposition’, the album sold nearly a million copies worldwide. I cheekily wondered if Dougie had become sick and tired of the track?
“I’m sick of hearing it on TV or the radio – or when I go to someone’s house they think it’s funny to put it on and I just leave” he laughs, “But what I never get tired of is seeing the reaction that that song gets (when we play it live)”

It’s important to change direction sometimes. Like if you are on a collision course for a planet, for instance. And frankly. deviations from the considered trajectory are sometimes really the very best thing a band can do. The Mystery Jets haven’t just changed direction from their synthy-pop flight path of their last two records (and the excellent After Dark dance-floor filler contribution to Count & Sinden’s Mega Mega Mega) – they’ve quite literally donned parachutes and jettisoned themselves in Austin Texas to make a record dripping in Americana.

But, wait. Unroll those predictable eyes, oh thee naysayer, because, actually, factually they’ve gone and done it impeccably. Like for reals. Transporting themselves from their origins on Eel Pie Island (yes, for real they are from a small island on the River Thames only accessible by footbridge or small boat) to the shore or the Colorado River in a country house in the Westlake area in Austin, Texas to write and record the sessions for this, their fourth/five album (it depends if you count the US only release of Zootime).

Opening with title-track Radlands which comes across as a mammoth statement of intent; rollocking as much as it swings; shit there’s steel guitars by the end. Yep. They are definitely in Texas, we got that; loud and clear; “I went to the dessert ‘cos I wanted to find my pistol” frontman Blaine Harrison considers in You Had Me At Hello – which by the time cracks into it’s chorus is beautifully AM radio Neil Youngsy; the bassline trickles like a near-dryed creek a the rugged western wasteland in contrast to the ‘Don’t worry your sweet lil’ head about it’ assurance. But they are still the Mystery Jets and an English indie-pop band and they do well to remind us of that by track three Someone Purer.

On Greatest Hits – a single in waiting methinks; Belle & Sebastian at their best are recalled (actually quite literally) and it’s honestly just sheer brilliance. Whoo-oo-oos, sha-la-las, ‘Stuck In The Middle With You’ and something almost Bonanza happens. I love it. “Are you still listening Mark E Smith?” this is followed closely by another personal favorite – sounding a bit like if Of Montreal were called Of Appalachia. But in a really, really good way.

The story goes that “Sister Everett” is based on the band’s experience in meeting a missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on the plane ride over to Texas; and her attempt to convert band member William Rees – the track segues from alt-indie-country squall to a beautifully soulful choral arrangement – which sparkles as another album highlight; which itself segues seamlessly into the laziness of Lost in Austin; sounding like a being late in the afternoon spent exploring; before closing with a Gram Parsons-esque Luminesemce.

There’s sniffs that this may well be the end of the Mystery Jets though – bassist and co-vocalist Kai Fish, ; while there for the making of the record has since announced his departure after last years solo project “Life In Monochrome”. We shall have to see what happens next; in the meantime I strongly recommend checking this new direction out – even it it transpires to be their dead-end. - review by Andrew Tidball

8.2/10

Today it was revealed that the new album is entitled Centipede Hz and will be out in September on Domino Records – and here is the tracklisting, which evidently confirms that neither tracks from the forthcoming single will be on the new album.

Read our interview with Ryan from The Cribs / check out the full audio too...

The three brothers (two of whom are twins) from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, Ryan, Gary and Ross Jarman are The Cribs, who this week, release their fifth album In The Belly of The Brazen Bull.

Cheese on Toast spoke to Ryan on the phone the other week from Hamburg in Germany – it was just after 9am in the morning there, so, being someone in a band; he was pretty tired – as someone said to me over the weekend “If you get up in the morning you’re not a musician” – and speaking of cruel and unnatural acts I wondered if there was a story behind the reference to a torture devise for the album’s title “In The Belly of The Brazen Bull”. Ryan explained, though that Gary had come up with the album’s title a while ago and had been quite insistent upon it. They had bought a book about methods of execution and torture while they were visiting Iceland – and an ancient greek method was the Brazen Bull – whereby victims were locked inside a hollow bronze bull under which a fire was light until the poor soul inside was basically roasted alive. Ryan explains he’s just really into that sort of thing; “When I was really young at high school someone lent me Faces of Death… It probably warped me in some ways”

Gary now lives in Portland – so the three brothers are separated by the Atlantic ocean – I wondered how this affected their songwriting.

“When we first started we all lived together and I think that’s why the first two records were simpler. There was a more singular vision to them” Ryan tells me – but now that Gary lives in Portland “and I don’t really live anywhere” – he comes over to Wakefield for a few weeks to write and we then go over to Portland for a few weeks to carry on writing. He tells me that this relocation and change of scenery is a really healthy thing for them to be able to write. He recalls when they made Ignore the Ignorant with Johnny Marr – because everyone, at the time, lived in different cities – they had to meet up in a room in Manchester and it started, at times, to feel too much like “work”.

Johnny has since left the band, on amicable terms, Ryan tells me – but I had often wondered how weird it must have been to be The Cribs – three brothers, successful already, to all of a sudden have Johnny Marr in the band. Ryan explains that it all just started reall organically – they had met a few times and had had a few drinks together, and as musicians tend to do when they drink, started to talk about writing a song together; so they did and before they knew it, it just worked so well that they ended up with an album’s worth of material. But, now, Ryan tells me, he looks back at that album and see’s it much more of a collaboration record – The Cribs with Johnny Marr; “Even though he’s a brilliant guitarist and I have a lot of admiration for him – we are supposed to be a three piece band – it’s what we are.” he tells me. When Johnny said he was going to leave they had already actually started making this record without him anyway – “If we had tried to do another record together (with Marr) out of obligation I don’t think it would have gone particularly well.” Ryan tells me.

This new record was recorded at Tarbox Road studio in New York with David Fridmann – The Cribs had long wanted to work with Fridman – having been huge fans of Weezer’s Pinkerton. “As a teenager Pinkerton was one of my favorite records” Ryan explains how he loves the organic, live and natural sound of the record – and how he’s always been a fan of records that sound like a band playing live in a room. “I don’t like too much time in the studio nit picking and changing stuff” he remarks.

You can listen to the whole interview here – Wakefield accent and all…

0 sec – Nick Drake interview segment
I’m pretty sure I’ve now got every single recorded piece of Nick Drake that exists, and this comes from an interview he did in his later years… dreamboat

9 sec – Vincent Gallo “I Wrote This Song For The Girl Paris Hilton”
Have you heard Vincent Gallo’s album “When”? It’s kind of the most beautiful thing ever. Dumb lyrics but I like that.

2m05 – Lullatone “Sleepytime Samba”
I toured these guys after hearing a couple of songs on some blog or another… Japanese / American couple. They’ve had a baby since. KAWAIIIII.

4m12 – Múm “The Ghosts You Draw On My Back”
From this Icelandic group’s darkest album, and possibly the last record with the original line-up. Not sure. But I love love love it.

6m06 – Yann Tiersen “La Dispute (Third Eye Foundation remix)”
You have to hear this Third Eye Foundation remix album called “I Poo Poo On Your Juju”. Just trust me, go download it.

8m02 – Roy Orbison “Mama (Matthew’s Meek Mix)”
Played this song on the radio for Mothers Day, having never heard it, and fell in love with. I knew immediately I had to remix it to make it slightly weirder and slower and then include it on this mix for YOUR listening pleasure.

10m28 – Matthew Crawley “Saddle The Violin”
This is me, Andrew said I had to put something from me on here, so here it is. The sample is not from Edward Scissorhands.

13m38 – Lawrence Arabia “Mystery Crypt”
Went to a village in Frances called Saintes with Lawrence Arabia. Recorded this in an 11th century crypt. No biggie.

15m55 – Joe Meek “I Hear A New World”
First heard this while I was working at Borders in Charing Cross Road, London, December 2000. I heard a new world.

18m05 – Lance Pearce “Leaves”
My friend Lance writes poems sometimes, and for the past 12 years he’s been calling my radio show or visiting me and reading them on air. He also emails me often with links, essays, thoughts, or youtube clips… so I’ve started collating the hundreds of amazing Lance-isms into a blog here: http://submittedbylance.tumblr.com/

18m23 – Matthew Crawley “Ukulele Loop”
Just a little uke interlude for you little sunbeams.

19m39 – Paul McCartney “Waterfalls”
The dorkiest song on his best solo album (McCartney II, 1980). Guess TLC musta had to get their ideas from SOMEWHERE.

21m30 – Ben & Bruno “100 Grim Reapers”
Quite possibly one of the most beautiful songs I know of. Curl up into a little ball. You have to hear the album, it’s also called “100 Grim Reapers”. Ben & Bruno is in fact just one guy called Peter. He lived here for a bit, then he left. Come back Peter.

24m22 – Robbie Basho “Blue Crystal Fire”
Sorry to whoever introduced me to this song, I can’t remember who you were to credit you. But man’o'man. Robbie Basho is mainly know for his guitar ragas, but this vocal take is “for fans of Antony & The Johnsons”, recorded when Antony was still in his cradle.

26m43 – Damien Jurado “Where Lies My Tarp?”
Damien Jurado is one of the greatest songwriters in the world. Here’s him breaking hearts with a cover of Phil Elverum.

29m13 – John Barry / Lullatone mash-up outro
Goodnight, sweet dreams xo

Stream the MIXTAPE from Miles G Loveless (aka Pikachunes)

As you may be aware, Miles aka Pikachunes is on the other side of the planet right now – over the weekend he played at Brighton’s Great Escape festivale no less than four times. (Twice as Pikachunes and twice in Princess Chelsea’s band)

Despite how busy the man is, when he heard that Cheese on Toast has this new occasional feature of streaming MIXTAPES; he wanted to make us one… And here it is…

1. George Lenton – Simply Beautiful
The title explains this song. It makes me want to make sweet love.

2. George Lenton – Kentoo
Nintendo Step.

3. Four tet – Glue of the Otherworld
I have have forever been in awe of Four tet. I watched him perform live in the pool at CALH 2011, which solidified for me that this guy is the best minimal/glitch producer alive.

4. The Chain – Lostwithiel Dub
There is something very sinister about The Chain’s production that hypnotises me. This track in particular just bounces along quite nicely. Good music to cook food too.

5. Koreless – Up Down Up Down
I have a deep love for electronic music. On occasion a track is produced that truly takes my breath away. Right now that is this track for me.

6. King Felix – Spring 02
I just really really like the kick in this track.

7. Uproot Andy/Florence Stamp
Axe Chop Riddim/Satisfied – Best use of a child vocal sample in any dance track.

8. Myrryrs – Feel You (Clicks and Whistles Remix)
90′s RnB meets 2 step. Oh fuck yes.

9. DJ Las K – Tiramisu
This song makes me want to bounce along the beach in tight, denim shorts.

10. Judgement Dernier – Coconut Love
More French house…Just coz.

11. Destroyer – Kaputt
Off the 9th(!!!!!) Album Kaputt. This guy just churns out music like a machine. It’s also all really really good.

12. Com Truise – Tripyra
Played the same festival as Com Truise in Brighton last week. This guy gives a new flavour to chill.
