GHOST WAVE have released their brand new music video for their single Here She Comes which is from their forthcoming debut album “Ages”, due out late June on Arch Hill in New Zealand.

The video was shot in Brooklyn when the band were over there last year for CMJ. It was made by Stuart Page, responsible for many great videos including the classic clip for Skeptics “Affco”, Snapper’s “Buddy” and Bailterspace’s “World We Share”.

On The National's sixth album, Trouble Will Find Me, Matt Berninger's rich, deep and beautiful baritone is as rich, deep and beautiful as ever, perhaps even more so...

“Indies be indie”, someone remarked recently, and while the true eloquence and nuance of the remark may have been lost on the person who made it (I am acutely aware of my “indie superiority complex” and inherent irony, in making such a claim) there is a salient truth in the remark that transcends it’s “Haters gonna hate” inspiration. Of course, it’s referencing the more modern bastardised meaning of the word “indie” which has been co-opted as a term to describe non-mainstream music, on one hand, and prats like me who arrogantly assert that our musical taste is superior to “non-indies”. Personally, I feel much more comfortable with being called a “music snob” – it’s a badge I proudly wear. I’d go so far as to assert that anyone who truly loves music is a snob about it and anyone who is relaxed about music really just likes background sounds; and to be fair, most normal people probably fit in to the latter group.

But the flip-side of this snobbery is that there’s a tendency by some “indies” for derision from anything that becomes popular – and this can be problematic. In my opinion there’s a semantic point of difference to be clear upon – has the music of a certain artist become popular because it is, simply put, “good” – or has the artist concerned, upon an apparent whiff of popularity, made changes to their art in order to meet further approval of the mainstream? Both happens and they are two very, very different fish kettles.

The National have been around a long time. This is their sixth album. And they have gone from strength to strength in popularity. To illustrate this, the last time they were in New Zealand they played three sell out shows at Auckland’s Powerstation; while the first time I saw them it was just after The Boxer was released at the more modest (albeit sold out) Kings Arms. That first time still, by the way, remains in my top ten gigs of all time. And the time I saw them at one of those Powerstation shows is up there too. Because, I think, the reason why The National have grown in popularity is simply because they consistently release wonderful records and the general population have just, simply, caught on.

While I don’t so much admit to being a music snob, for ‘admission’ implies that it’s a guilt, and, rather I proudly declare it as so – I do not have a problem with a band I love becoming popular. On the self-centred hand, I rather take this as a vindication of my conviction over the band; and on the other, more altruistic hand, I am both happy that a band that I love are making a decent living doing what they do and that a more general population are listening to and enjoying good music instead of the bullshit that populates so much of popular music charts and is force fed down their throats by uninspired commercial radio programmers.

On The National’s sixth album, Trouble Will Find Me, Matt Berninger’s rich, deep and beautiful baritone is as rich, deep and beautiful as ever, perhaps even more so – apparently he’s recently given up smoking – this can only be a good thing. My first heart-melt moment on the record comes at his utterance of the words “I can’t fight it anymore, I am going through an awkward phase / I am secretly in love everyone that I grew up with” on Demons followed closely by the breath he breaths in the micro-second before the first time he sings the first chorus. By the time the album closes, said melty heart is a bloody gooey mess on my metaphor-floor. I have found that the more I surrender to this record the greater the reward.

The opening rhythm of Don’t Swallow the Cup is as sublime as Berninger’s sweet intones in his higher register on the song; which somehow act as a kind of tease to the warmer lower that eludes us the whole song through. Sea Of Love contains the albums title early on before it builds and builds to a frantic and wonderful crescendo call-response which alternates from empathy to sardonic humour in its call to a lost friend – “I see you rushing down / Tell me how to reach you / I see you rushing down / What did Harvard teach you?”.

Graceless opens with a solid pitter-patter of drums like a heavy rain shower before turning into victorious album centre-point not a million miles from “Abel” or “Bloodbuzz Ohio” on previous albums. It’s glorious. But my personal album favourite comes in the form of Pink Rabbits; a paced and understated ballad towards the album close that’s as poignant as it’s beautiful as it’s delicate and the line “You didn’t see me I was falling apart / I was a television version of a person with a broken heart” as wry as it’s sad.

What’s actually sad, though, is the neigh sayers who claim that just because they liked the National before people with mustard coloured turn up trousers did makes them a better person and in some twisted logic therefore makes this album not as good as Alligator or The Boxer. Between you and me, I have a sneaky suspicion that 50% of people who trot this line out are revisionist in their personal history and didn’t, actually, really, discover The National till later; which is actually fine to admit, if it was actually the case, but y’know, as Franko says : “Indies be indie”.

RATING 8.7/10

It’s being released on Sweat It Out! Music, and it’s a gorgeous example of piano fuelled uplifting house which both bounces and drive along. It’s a total cracker in my opinion.

Stream it here

Daniel has dedicated to his friend Adrian Thomas aka DJ Ajax who died earlier this year; he was crossing a road in Parkville, an inner Melbourne suburb, in the early hours of 28 February 2013 when he was hit by a truck and died at the scene. He tells Cheese on Toast :

“I started Terace late last year working with some liked minded (and more talented musicians than I) and the first thing we finished was ‘Running’. The first person I sent it to was Adrian (AJAX) who wrote back immediately and colorfully excited about it saying he 100% wanted to sign it straight away, and that he wanted to lock Terace in to a record deal with Sweat. This first single is dedicated to him, his energy, and his ability to make anybody feel good, included, and involved when he engaged with them, no matter how big or small they were.“

As the Ballads & Badlands Tour 2013 draws to close, well, as of tomorrow we’re on the home stretch! I miss my own bed, the smell of Auckland rain, eating dumplings on Dominion Road at 10 pm, and working at that little Cantina on K Rd. We’ve been blown away by the turnouts and the vibes of all of our shows so far, it’s hard yakka out here, but we love it. As we begin to feel the bags well up under our eyes we know we’ve got the fire in us to finish this tour with a bang.

I wanted to take this time to make a few mentions of some fine establishments and people that I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying over the last couple of days as we’ve both taken a well needed day off:

Evil Genius Record Store – by the far the sweetest little hangout in Wellington, Apa, Rosie & Ben are fine folk who made our Monday night pot-luck dinner a beautiful affair.

Customs Brew Bar on Ghuznee Street – without a doubt the best coffee in Wellington. Holla Coffee Supreme.

Emporium Vintage Clothing – total babes, I had my annual browse and came out with a bloody good pair of boots that fit like a glove. Nothing like a new pair of boots to make you feel like a new woman.

It’s taken from the bands forthcoming debut album ‘Welcome To Planet Lesley’ which is planned for official release in mid June – although word is that the band are playing a show at Tauranga’s Major Toms on 31st of May and that there will be “sneaky pre-sales” of the album at that show. Annabel from the band tells Cheese on Toast that they are planning an official album release party :

“there is going to be a sick album release party for it haha and that each album comes with glow in the dark planet stickers”

She added that the whole album was recorded live in about 2 hours – with Bob Frisbee recording and mastering.

Here’s the stream of the single – and for now, this is the only place on the internet you can hear it!

‘Welcome To Planet Lesley’ will be coming out mid june with sneaky tauranga pre-sales happening on the 31st of may. And that there is going to be a sick album release party for it haha and that each album comes with glow in the dark planet stickers and that the whole thing was recorded live in about 2 hours.

Surf City will be releasing their second album We Knew It Was Not Going to Be Like This in August – via Arch Hill in New Zealand and Fire in the US/Europe.

The band have had a bit of a break and now they are back, having recorded their album in New York, New Zealand and South Korea.

Here is the first single from the album, titled It’s A Common Life

Spin Magazine writes of the first single “the LP’s sunny first taste, “It’s a Common Life,” glows with a West Coast pedigree. Reverb-soaked guitar stabs, a laidback call-to-arms chorus, and ba-ba-ba backup vocals make for a perfectly timed single.”

Cheese on Toast writes (right here, as you read it) that “I think Davin’s voice is sounding even more awesome than ever – at times teetering on a young, but possibly just as cantankerous J Mascis. And I agree that ba-ba-ba/ba-ba-bow vocal is pretty choice, but seriously, that’s just a small part of the awesome.”

It’s also available for purchase as a digital download from Bandcamp

They band are also warming up for the album release with a couple of shows in June :

14th June – Lucha Lounge – Auckland
15th of June – Mighty Mighty – Wellington

Cheese on Toast's daily TRACK O' DAWN (where we post a new track each day at dawn) has proven to be so highly popular that demands for more than one dawn per day have been received by NZ's Met Service from eager fans wanting more music.*

Cheese on Toast’s daily TRACK O’ DAWN (where we post a new track each day at dawn) has proven to be so highly popular that demands for more than one dawn per day have been received by NZ’s Met Service from eager fans wanting more music.*

Obviously creating two sunrises per day just so that we could post more new music for your ears was going to be a solution rife with it’s own problems. And in the end, it just wasn’t going to be logistically feasible. So in a stroke of genius, Cheese on Toast has has simply decided to post new tracks at two new times of day.

“The solution came to me during a sleepless night of worry over the problem”, says Cheese on Toast editor Andrew Tidball, “instead of going to the length of altering time and space to try and create two sunrises, I figured I’d just use the existing time to deliver the best new tunes (and some oldies every now and then)”

In a move, not just doubling the amount of new music recommendation, but tripling it, Cheese on Toast is very pleased to announce that effective from today, Thursday 22 May, two further daily posts have been created to join the daily TRACK O’ DAWN music post - TUNE AT NOON and the even more unfortunately named DUSK JAM.

TRACK O’DAWN already boasts being the first post of new music every day in the world, based on the premise that it’s posted daily at the precise time (ish) of sunrise here in New Zealand, where each day is greeted first in the world due to the nature of the International Time Line. Now, with TUNE AT NOON we can celebrate being the first people in the world to eat our packed lunch everyday. In addition, the third daily music post DUSK JAM will celebrate making it through yet another day at the office / on the couch, and be posted at sunset in New Zealand precisely (ish).

“I am confident that the three daily posts, in addition to the usual posts of album reviews, music news, videos, photos etc etc will keep Cheese on Toast readers more than satisfied” said Tidball, to himself, in a sleepy daze this morning. He’s annoying to live with, clearly. “I’m very excited about today’s three posts which I already know what they will be – and one of them will be the exclusive worldwide debut of the new single from Auckland punk trio GRRLFRIENDZ” he mumbled, letting the proverbial cat out of the bag. Tidball has already described the new song on social media as “The best one minute of your life this week” His actual cat remained asleep at the foot of the bed, unimpressed.

*not actually true

TOUR DIARY ENTRY IN BULLET POINT FORM

TOUR DIARY ENTRY IN BULLET POINT FORM

♦ We were welcomed to Nelson by a beautiful rainbow.

♦ We missed the un-signposted direct route to Picton from Nelson and instead drove around in a circle, luckily arriving to the ferry on time.

♦ We played the infamous ferry gig to a tableful of teenaged Australians wearing bear-hats.

♦ We saw dolphins jumping and diving behind the ferry, imparting a little of their joy to our hearts.

♦ We collected Flora Knight Fiddle Player Extraordinaire from the depths of Wellington and trucked her to Featherston with us.

♦ We set up the PA, ate dinner, and put our faces on in record-breaking time, and still liked each other at the end of it.

♦ Nadia started the evening with a jaeger shot. And sang Rihanna.

♦ I nearly got in a fight with a local who heckled with un-funny, sexist humour. A few deep breaths later, I thought it might be better to just play some songs.

♦ Less than 5 minutes into the return drive to Wellington, in heavy rain, I suddenly screamed, swerved, pulled over and jumped out of the car. I’d looked down to find a FUCKING MASSIVE SPIDER ON MY FINGER. Thorough searching of the car revealed no arachnid to be found, leaving the other girls to quietly question my sanity.

At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.

Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison.

After Morrison’s death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors’ guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.

“I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today,” said Krieger. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.”

Multi-Instrumentalist and vocalist, Craig Terris is currently touring his debut solo album 'Bleat Your Heart Out'....

Multi-Instrumentalist and vocalist, Craig Terris is currently touring his debut solo album ‘Bleat Your Heart Out’. Upon its release in November, it became an instant favourite with audiences and critics alike…

Cheese on Toast loves this album – we’re even quoted in the press release for this tour :

“…by the time it comes to it’s gorgeous close you realise that this album is not just an ‘interesting quirky gem’ but actually something more akin to an undiscovered masterpiece. ”

Pretty eloquent huh? And not one typo!

I’m not alone in the praise though :

“…a melodic dimension to Terris’ talent…easily a match for his rhythmic skills and that’s precisely what comes to the fore on his first solo album” – Nick Bollinger, Radio New Zealand

Even Sweetman likes it:

“Craig Terris Group, have really got their shit locked down… brilliant, widescreen rock-influenced pop music… the tunes are catchy, have hooks and harmonies and there are nuances – but there is just enough bombast. The right amount.” – Simon Sweetman, Off The Tracks

For some background info :
Terris has mostly been known for providing drums and backing vocals – recording and touring with Cassette, Samuel Flynn Scott, Luke Buda, Lawrence Arabia, Bachelorette, Barry Saunders and The Warratahs to name a few. Meanwhile, he’s also been writing and recording his own material, eventually tracking ‘Bleat Your Heart Out’ at his home studio space and Wellington’s Surgery studio. The album is largely self-recorded with Terris playing the majority of the instruments himself, but also is made of many contributions from a wonderful line up of talented contemporaries , finally mixed by Brett Stanton and mastered by Dale Cotton.

Craig Terris is on tour with his band (Craig Terris (guitar, vocals), Jeremy Taylor (guitar, vocals), Andrew Bain (bass), and Benjamin Cole (drums))

25 May – Golden Dawn – Auckland, w/ Dictaphone Blues
07 June – Darkroom – Christchurch
08 June -Chicks Hotel – Dunedin
15 June Mighty Mighty – Wellington w/ Barry Saunders

THE BLUENESS is John White (Mestar, Cloudboy, Mental Health Triangle)' s new band...

THE BLUENESS is John White (Mestar, Cloudboy, Mental Health Triangle)’ s new band – they have an album Ravendah Dream released on Seattle record label CTPAK Records last year. This is the eponymous lead single.

If you dig that, I know I do, then check out this sneaky preview stream too… (where the audio sounds much gnarlier than on the video)

Somehow, Cheese on Toast is late to this particular party – this all came out last year – but hey, better late to the party than never!

The very fist NZ PRIME ROCKS screens this Wednesday night, May 22nd, at 9.3pm on PRIME TV – telling the untold story of our most eccentric pop icon, Jordan Luck, and the band whose sound defines what it means to be Kiwi.

From the press release :
“Who is the band behind songs like Victoria and Why Does Love Do This To Me? What is it about these songs that make them so quintessentially Kiwi? A musical saga 30 years in the making, this is a tender and timely story of friendship, betrayal and redemption told against the backdrop of the band’s return to the studio to record a selection of songs written in the early 80’s and never before laid to tape. As unique and entertaining characters, each member of the group takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of the band in the first ever local Prime Rocks documentary.”

THE EXPONENTS became one of the most successful band’s in NZ history, arguably, they reflect the New Zealand cultural experience like no other group has or possibly ever will. The doco will cover from their early days playing backwater pubs through to belting out their anthems to 1000s and also documents their return to Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios to record some of Jordan’s earliest material; most of which never made it to an album in the course of their 30 year career.

This is appointment viewing
THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT
May 22nd 9.30pm
PRIME TV

The Naked and Famous are in the studio right now working on a follow-up for Passive Me Aggressive You. But, in the meantime they are releasing a package of b-sides and remixes digitally (out today).

The compilation pulls together 22 tracks with remixes by the likes of Dave Sitek, Felix Da Housecat, and White Sea appearing alongside a host of others.

A limited edition vinyl LP of B-Sides was released for Record Store Day last month. The full collection includes some previously-unheard mixes including The Sight Below and Young Magic that the band has held onto until now.

“I know this may seem a little overdue,” says Thom Powers of the band. “A few of the remixes disappeared into the fleeting remix-blogosphere and some territories never had a chance to get hold of any B-sides. We felt we needed to tidy all this stuff up into one concise package.

“It was a little tricky to collate but it contains some very cool unreleased remixes, a collaboration with our friends Kids Of 88 and a very intimate version of No Way. It feels like a nice way to end the PMAY era”.
