Glass Owls EP Release

On 25 June Glass Owls held their EP Release Party at Cassette Nine’s weekly MUM Clubnight. John the Baptist from Wellington and Death Valley played too. The lovely Miss Amanda Cheng took these photos. Then she went overseas and her mom borrowed her camera and there was some delay getting the images online, oops. But better late than never huh?

Last Friday – 11 June – Cheese on Toast curated and hosted the Mum Clubnight (we’re doing it once a month now!) – and we brought up Thought Creature from Wellington to play alongside local noisytrio Rackets an introduced the totally awesome Autumn Splendour – who were so good we’ve invited them back to headline next month’s Cheese on Toast MUM.

Awesome Feelings Launch Party @ Mum Clubnight, Cassette Nine

Last Friday at Cassette Nine, May 28th, really was an AWESOME FEELING. Not simply because it was a mega-party thrown by the choice folks at Real Groove in celebration of their AWESOME FEELING volume 4 compilation of new exciting NZ music (and, Cheese on Toast wants to add, that RG get it right every year with these compilations. Fantastic.
But it was also an AWESOME SHOW – the amazing Mothers of Darkness opened – and what a fucking awesome way to start any night! Followed by the crazy-wonderful-weirdness of Sam Hamilton and then the equally brilliant Diana Rozz from Wellington. And then everyone’s favorites Drab Doo Riffs would up the ‘live’ performances before we were introduced to Leno Lovecraft on the decks – who dropped an amazing DJ set including many of his own compositions – apparently you should watch out for his album dropping in stores soon – amazing stuff.

The Cult

The Cult played at Trusts Stadium Arena in Waitakere on Monday night -playing their seminal and classic album Love in it’s entirety. All reports received are that it was an amazing show.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend totally had us in the palms of their collective hands on Thursday night at Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna. Kicking off the show with White Sky followed by the bouncy Holiday – the energy and enthusiasm of the jam-packed audience was as infectious as bassist Chris Baio’s dance moves were nerdy. The hype in the crowd was amped further with I Stand Corrected from their first album and then things went ballistic when they played their anthem A Punk – dureing which my companion and I couldn’t help but notice Rostam Batmanglij’s cumface – it was kinda hilarious.

Vampire Weekend returned for a three song encore – consisting of Horchata, Mansford Roof and Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa – despite the high energy in the audience there was only one crowd surfer noticed – who, when pulled out of the crowd by security managed, we thought, quite gracefully, to propel himself on-stage – albeit only briefly before being curtailed by security.

Support was ably supplied by Knives at Noon from Dunedin with their specific brand of synth-rock-pop – a few interesting numbers – and promises of much much more to come, methinks.

Favorite overheard quote of the night : “Mum’s meeting us out front … OMG I think I’m pregnant”
