MATTHEW’ ALBUM OF THE WEEK
It’s been a long time coming, but Pyschosis of Love is here. Local duo Jade Farley and Gwen Norcliffe are The Gladeyes, and the two have been making gloriously lo-fidelity bedroom-artschool-pop for as long as I can recall. It’s been a long path to releasing a full-length record, but the wait has been worth it… this is a lovingly crafted masterpiece. With a playfulness that is only matched by its wistful wit and genuine beauty, Psychosis… is a superbly realised debut. Aside from the surprisingly well appropriated covers of Die! Die! Die! classic “Shyness Will Get You Nowhere” and Half Japanese’s attempt at a pop tune – “1,000,000 Kisses” – the album is full of notable moments. Several of the songs revolve around the hapless Monika and Damien – a fictional pair of melancholic hopefuls who spend their time trying to make sense of love and life… “Bad Town Blues” is a near-perfect pop song, while “The End of the World Because You Don’t Love Me Anymore” employs a children’s choir to twist the knife further in the heartache. I could go on for hours, you really need to hear this record. Glee! MC
